Nothing is quite like a hot cup of coffee and a deep chocolate brownie on a cold rainy day. So here are two of my favorite ways to use coffee with brownies (other than drinking it).
1. Most brownie recipes are so sweet that the taste of quality chocolate is overwhelmed by the presence of sugar. What I often do is substitute any water content with strong coffee. The recipe I use calls for one-quarter cup of water so I just use espresso instead. This cuts the overwhelming sweetness without diluting the deep chocolate flavor.
2. Food texture adds pizzazz to whatever you are eating. The texture of brownies is pretty much one note. Gooey goodness can feel boring after a couple of bites. To combat this I often add nuts in the mix. But my coffee hack is even better. Take some dark roasted coffee beans and place them in a baggie. Use whatever you find handy to break them into small bits. Sprinkle them on top of your brownie just before you eat it. The result is not only a delectable combination of coffee and chocolate, but also a delightful crunch in each bite. It is not too much, but creates a very nice texture. Trust me. These brownies will be a notch above anything you have ever tried.
